Day 75 of our summer trip. Seward Highway
We are traveling on the Seward Highway on the way to Seward, AK. We have just crested the Turnagain Pass at 1015 ft. That doesn’t seem very high, but because the mountains have been carved by glaciers, they are steeper and go from sea level to peak in just about one line. The left photo is taken looking back where we came from and the right photo is looking in the direction that we will be going to get to Seward. Right here the hills remind me of photos that I have seen of Ireland, so green and fresh. They must get a lot of moisture here.
See what I mean? Here we are at the rest area.
As we proceeded down the Seward Peninsula, we began to see more mountains and glaciers.
We found a campsite at Marathon RV Park It is a city owned park right on the shore or Resurrection Bay in Seward,AK. Here is our beautiful campsite and what a view it has!
One of our Montana Owners club members wrote about staying here over the 4th of July. On that day, there is a run up Mt. Marathon and back. It is a grueling run and I can’t imagine doing it let alone finishing it. These folks have to be in great shape! We had intended to be here to see the event this year, but our plans were diverted. We had to rearrange our itinerary. Now we are here and are looking at the trail that the Mt. Marathon runners take. They have to run up the mountain from basically sea level take a left at the Y in the trail, run around behind the peak and down the right side of the Y and down to the bottom again. See what I mean by a test of your endurance? There is a link, if you want more information and to see pictures of previous events.
When we arrived at the campground, there was a cruise ship in port. We watched it leave in the evening. The ship backed out into the bay, sea gulls following close behind.
A tour boat passed the cruise ship while it was still backing out of the harbor. It finally got turned around and headed for the open sea.
We love our spot with an ocean view. We can look out our back window and see all sorts of activity. There are tour boats, fishing boats, cruise ships, and jet skis passing by. Here is a boat that goes out to where the fishermen are catching salmon, etc. and buys the fish right there to take back for processing. It is owned by one of the commercial seafood processors.
There is wild life, too, There are several sea otters that hang out just off shore from our trailer. We see them often, just rolling and diving and playing. There are birds, too. They are a little harder to capture in the viewfinder before they are flying off again.
We took a drive through town because we had to make reservations for the Kenai Fjords boat tour for tomorrow. It is one of the 2 for 1 coupons in our Alaska Tour Savers coupon book. While we were driving around trying to see where things were located, we came across some very interesting things. I think that this was a taxi in the first picture. He sure went out of his way to decorate his vehicle. The second picture is of a unique business. They called their place the Train Rec. and Whistle Stop Lodging. It is made from old Alaska Railways engine and cars. The restaurant portion is called the Smoke Shack.
This is a view down the street of Seward and a view looking toward the small boat harbor at the end of our campground.
We have our reservations for the Kenai Fjords boat cruise tomorrow evening. We signed up for the optional roast beef and salmon dinner that is prepared on board. We are looking forward to that as well as seeing whatever is out there in the fjords.
